How Should a Teacher Manage The Class?

Written by Aziza Restu Febriantp

One of the problems that generally teachers face in teaching in a classroom is how to manage the class and control their students. Many teachers use inappropriate ways such as snapping at the students when they are too noisy and bothering the lesson. Or even they sometimes give hard punishments for the students who are not following their instructions. Therefore, being a good teacher, you are actually not only knowledgeable in the subject you are handling, but you also need to know how to control a class and to maintain discipline for the students. The following management skills need to be considered to be a professional teacher.
  1. Authority
The teachers’ performance determines the teaching success by attracting the students to pay more attention to the lesson given. However, it is not good for them to get the students’ attention by making them laugh, snigger, and giggle because they look frumpy and dressed badly. In order to get a serious response from your class, you need to have a positive and authoritative manner about yourself. As you are sure of yourself to look presentable, it is easy to show our authority just by the way you look.
  2. Knowledge
It is impossible to teach without having deep knowledge about the subject. Teachers who have strong authority are those who master the subject they are teaching well.  In addition, if you want to be considered as a good teacher and earn your students’ respect, you must be thoroughly knowledgeable in your subject and know widely in the others too. Your students will consider that you are a great and attractive teacher when you could show them that you have broad knowledge and wide insight. As a result, you deserve to get their respect in every meeting in the classroom.
  3. Individualization
A teacher is definitely responsible for the students comprehension of any materials given. They must ensure whether or not all students have understood the lesson during the class before giving a test. It is actually not easy because with the variety of the students in class, you have to make sure that all of them seriously pay attention to our whole explanation. You have to remember that all students in class are different. Most classes are exactly a mix of average and brilliant students. Hence, as a teacher, it is best to understand each student with their various characters and prepare the lessons based on them.
  4. Time management
Teaching is not just explaining and delivering the materials in class, but it also needs a skill to make the class entertaining. Having an entertaining class, students will always be glad to follow all the teachers instructions and explanations and they won’t even get bored of them. When the students are enjoying the class, it is not difficult for a teacher to manage them. However, making the class interesting and enjoyable, you must be able to manage the time. Therefore, your students do not realize that they have spent the whole class times focusing on the lesson you give.
  5. Patience
Considering the various students with different characters and competence in class, a teacher must be patient because it is hard for him/ her to control and manage the class with noisy students by showing anger. As a good teacher, you need to show your cool attitude without frustration while facing chaos among the students to keep controlling and explaining the lesson.
