Recommended English Teaching Books from Cambridge

By Aziza Restu Febrianto

Are you an English teacher? But you sometimes get stuck to find appropriate and authentic materials for teaching, especially conversations?

You could try to consider these following books I share as one of your teaching references.

Student's Books and Core Modules

I am really grateful to be given a chance to officially use a lot of authentic materials from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) to teach English in my old school. With its comprehensive curriculum and rich materials designed for students all over the world, the school allowed me to explore knowledge and improve my pedagogical skill, particularly when dealing with issues of language learning in EFL and ESL contexts. As I taught general English to my secondary school students, I found these books really amazing. The ‘Let’s talk’ books are very well-designed and organized specifically for professional English instructors teaching English from intermediate to advanced levels in any appropriate contexts.

Considering the contents, the topics discussed and the tasks provided, these books help an instructor to engage his/ her students in very fun contextual learning activities which lead them to know what to say in English relating to the situations illustrated in each unit. For example, in the Unit 1, I find a topic which is really common for anyone learning English for the first time such as ‘Self Introduction’ and ‘Breaking the Ice.’ The topic ‘Getting to know you’ and the suggested learning activities in this unit enable students to understand particular expressions naturally used by native speakers when starting a conversation. Students are also encouraged to identify the expressions through the listening sections and then use them in speaking. In fact, they can simultaneously enrich their vocabulary and use all new words they find through speaking and writing. The activities also include individual and group work discussions as well as interactive games which stimulate learners to be active in spoken interactions. Accordingly, I strongly recommend these books to be used in a big classroom teaching as well.

The above  pages show how these books are well-organized to support students participation and engagement in learning activities
