This action research shows the improvement of students’ speaking abilities through Two Stay – Two Stray technique in the material of Job Interview in Grade 12 Marketing of SMKN 2 Semarang. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which the technique of Two Stay – Two Stray (TS – TS) can improve the ability of students in speaking English, especially during the Job Interview class.

Two Stay – Two Stray is one of learning techniques in cooperative learning. In this technique, the students were given an opportunity to speak in turns. According to the Job interview teaching material, each student in group was given two different roles. In this case, each group consists of five students. Two students played a role as the interviewers and the other two students became the job applicants. And lastly, one remaining student became an observer whose job was to record the activity in the group. The two students who played the role as the job applicants visited all the groups to have an interview. While the other two students as the interviewers stayed in this group. This activity was done in turns. Therefore, all of the students got the entire roles. The subjects of the research were the students of Grade 12 Marketing class of SMKN 2 Semarang in the academic year 2013/ 2014. Thirty two students were involved in this research. To achieve the goal of the study, the researcher conducted an action research including a demonstration. According to Wallace (1998:4), action research is a process, which is done by systematically collecting data on teacher’s everyday practice and analyzing it in order to make some decisions about what her/his future practice should be. Hopkins said that the aim of action research as means of extending professional behaviours and encouraging flexibility in professional development (1993:71). The action research was carried out in two cycles. There was a simulation test at at the end of each cycle. The aim of the test is to measure the student’s progress and result of the teaching –learning activities using “Two Stay  - Stray” (TS-TS) structure.

Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the Two Stay – Two Stray technique (TS-TS) was really helpful for helping teachers teach speaking. The study shows how the technique could work successfully in improving students’ ability in speaking English. The result of the research can be seen from the data provided after the action research conducted. The result gained is concluded as follows; the mean score of speaking class in the first cycle was 6.61 and the mean score gained in the second cycle was 12.20. Therefore, the difference was 5.59. It is very obvious that there was exactly a significant difference found when applying the TS - TS technique in speaking class.

Recommended English Teaching Books from Cambridge

By Aziza Restu Febrianto

Are you an English teacher? But you sometimes get stuck to find appropriate and authentic materials for teaching, especially conversations?

You could try to consider these following books I share as one of your teaching references.

Student's Books and Core Modules

I am really grateful to be given a chance to officially use a lot of authentic materials from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) to teach English in my old school. With its comprehensive curriculum and rich materials designed for students all over the world, the school allowed me to explore knowledge and improve my pedagogical skill, particularly when dealing with issues of language learning in EFL and ESL contexts. As I taught general English to my secondary school students, I found these books really amazing. The ‘Let’s talk’ books are very well-designed and organized specifically for professional English instructors teaching English from intermediate to advanced levels in any appropriate contexts.

Sequenced scheme of the Let's Talk 2
Considering the contents, the topics discussed and the tasks provided, these books help an instructor to engage his/ her students in very fun contextual learning activities which lead them to know what to say in English relating to the situations illustrated in each unit. For example, in the Unit 1, I find a topic which is really common for anyone learning English for the first time such as ‘Self Introduction’ and ‘Breaking the Ice.’ The topic ‘Getting to know you’ and the suggested learning activities in this unit enable students to understand particular expressions naturally used by native speakers when starting a conversation. Students are also encouraged to identify the expressions through the listening sections and then use them in speaking. In fact, they can simultaneously enrich their vocabulary and use all new words they find through speaking and writing. The activities also include individual and group work discussions as well as interactive games which stimulate learners to be active in spoken interactions. Accordingly, I strongly recommend these books to be used in a big classroom teaching as well.

The above  pages show how these books are well-organized to support students participation and engagement in learning activities

Since the publications are highly protected by Cambridge copyright, I guarantee that these books cannot be found in any websites or blogs for free. Are You Listening Effectively?

Are You Listening Effectively?

*By Aziza Restu Febrianto

When you hear a particular sound or talk, it does not mean you are listening. Allowing words to pour into your ears is not listening. Listening is a kind of skills that most people likely neglect. And listening is one of the most important methods used in learning.

Listening is not just absorbing sound. To be a good listener, we have to be active. As we place ourselves close to the speaker or instructor, we would possibly be able to see and hear the information easily. The further away we are from him or her, the greater the chance of sound being distorted or interfered by normal room noises such as overhead projector, fans, heating blowers, or probably noises from outside the room.

We should also use thought speed. Our mind works many times faster than the speaker can talk. Some research studies shows findings that the rate of the brain is almost four times that of normal speech. It explains why daydreaming occurs very frequently during a lecture in class. Anticipate and focus on where the speaker is going with the lecture.

Another thing to do is looking for the important ideas. Most speakers introduce a few new ideas and provide explanations, examples or other support for them. Our job is to identify the main ideas. He or she may return to the same few ideas again and again. So, be alert to them.

Next, listen for the signals. Good speakers use signals to point out particular information they are going to say. Common used signals are:

  • When mentioning an example: ‘for example’ ‘There are three reasons why …’
  • To signal support material: ‘For instance’ ‘Similarly’ ‘in contrast’ ‘On the other hand’
  • As they signal a conclusion or summary: ‘In conclusion….,’ ‘Finally…,’ ‘As a result….’
  •  To signal importance: ‘Now this is very important…’ ‘Remember that…’

Lead rather than follow. Leading involves two steps:

  • Read assignments given before we come to the meeting. If we read before we hear the lecture or speech, we will so much be more alert to main and important ideas.
  • Set up questions to keep ourselves in the lead. But these are not questions we use to ask the speaker. The all questions are basically used as our plans for listening.

Take notes. In usual conversations, we tend to interpret, classify and summarize what is said. In classroom learning, we do this very effectively by keeping written notes. Note taking helps us listen by providing a sequence organization to what we hear. It is very difficult to listen to a lot of disorganized and unrelated bits of information altogether. Organization is the key for effective listening and remembering.

Amin. And finally, “Tips without actions are nothing!”
